On September 3rd, Nvidia officially announced the acquisition of the world's largest open-source AI platform Hugging Face for $12.93 billion. About $11.9 billion of the $12.9 billion was paid to the original shareholders, and the remaining $1 billion was reserved for employees joining Nvidia. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2027. The Hugging Face platform has over 18 million developers, more than 3 million models, 500,000 datasets, and over 200,000 companies using it to deploy AI. The drama of this deal lies in the fact that at the end of last year, Hugging Face just rejected a $500 million investment from Nvidia, citing the reason "not wanting a single investor to influence platform neutrality." Yet less than a year later, they sold the entire company. Founder Clément Delangue explained that open-source AI has reached a turning point; to grow from 18 million users to 100 million, they need a parent company that can provide computing power, infrastructure, and global channels. He proactively approached Huang, and after a few weeks of talks, the deal was finalized. What does Huang want? Nvidia already has GPUs, the CUDA ecosystem, and DGX Cloud; developers cannot avoid it at every step from buying cards to running training, except for the model discovery, evaluation, download, and distribution part, which is not under its control. Buying Hugging Face is equivalent to buying the super router of open-source AI.
