In the fall of 2015, the last batch of A&P supermarkets in the northeastern United States began clearance sales. The red round signs still hung at the doors, but the shelves were emptier day by day. Nearby residents pushed shopping carts searching for discounts, while employees waited for the stores to be sold or closed. It is hard to imagine that this company was once so large that it changed what Americans ate, where they shopped, and how much they were willing to pay. Around 1930, A&P had more than 15,000 stores, with annual sales of about $2.9 billion, making it the world's largest retailer at the time. It once accounted for about one-tenth of all grocery spending in the U.S., surpassing contemporaries like Sears and Kroger in scale. From starting as a tea seller in 1859 to completely exiting the market in 2015, A&P lasted 156 years. The demand for food has always existed, and supermarkets have not disappeared. What was eliminated was a retail system that was once highly efficient but increasingly failed to keep up with changes in land, logistics, capital, and consumers. From a tea shop to a national chain, A&P's full name is The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company. In 1859, George Gilman ran a tea business in New York and later partnered with George Huntington Hartford to deliver tea, coffee, and spices to more cities. 19th-century America was being connected by railroads.
