"The Compound Interest of Life Vol.26|Simone Biles: She paused mid-air and then brought herself back to the highest point"
On July 27, 2021, during the women's gymnastics team final at the Tokyo Olympics, Simone Biles rushed toward the vault. She originally planned to perform a Yurchenko double pike, but after takeoff, she suddenly lost her spatial awareness in the air. She downgraded the move to a one-and-a-half twist, barely landed, and took a large step forward. Minutes later, she withdrew from the team final and subsequently gave up on the individual all-around, vault, uneven bars, and floor exercise finals. Gymnasts call this loss of spatial awareness the "twisties." The body has left the apparatus, but the brain cannot confirm the rotation position; moves practiced thousands of times suddenly lose their coordinates. To ordinary viewers, that jump looked like a mistake; to the gymnast flipping in midair, continuing could have ended with a head, neck, or spine injury upon landing. Tokyo had no live audience, but the TV cameras broadcast her decision worldwide. Some called her brave, others labeled her a "quitter." She once thought the entire United States hated her. A week later, Biles returned to the balance beam, replaced the dismount requiring a twist, and won a bronze medal. She later called it one of her most important medals. That bronze did not prove she had fully recovered; it recorded another ability: knowing what she could safely complete that day. Three years later, she won three gold medals in Paris for team, individual all-around, and vault, plus a silver in floor exercise. A person who once lost direction midair stood again on the highest podium. The real compounding happened during her two-year hiatus, weekly therapy, restructured training, and finally being able to say, "Today"

"The Past Has Been On-Chain" Vol.19|September 29, 2017: South Korea's "Complete Ban" Pushes ICO Projects Overseas
At 10 a.m. on September 29, 2017, a cross-departmental meeting on cryptocurrency began in the Seoul government office building in South Korea. The meeting was chaired by Kim Yong-beom, Vice Chairman of the Financial Services Commission of Korea. Representatives from the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Justice, Bank of Korea, National Tax Service, National Police Agency, and Financial Supervisory Service sat at the same table to discuss the hottest fundraising method at the time: ICO. After the meeting, the Financial Services Commission announced one sentence: Regardless of the technology used or the name adopted, South Korea will ban all forms of ICO. According to time zone conversion, the meeting time corresponded to 9 a.m. that day in Taiwan, with no date crossover. Reuters published a report at 05:14 UTC that day, corresponding to 1:14 p.m. in Taiwan. Therefore, this issue uses the regulatory meeting and policy disclosure date of September 29, 2017. ICO stands for "Initial Coin Offering." The project team first writes a white paper explaining the blockchain, platform, or application they plan to develop, then sells their issued Tokens to investors, usually accepting ETH or BTC. This model eliminates underwriters, equity negotiations, and lengthy reviews typical in traditional financing. A small team, as long as it has a story, a website, and a smart contract, can potentially raise tens of millions of dollars from global investors within weeks. In 2017, ICOs rapidly became the most crowded track in the crypto market. Investors feared missing out on the "next Ethereum," and projects competed to shorten fundraising time. Some tokens represented future service usage rights, some promised profit distribution, and others
"The Compound Interest of Life Vol.25|Angela Merkel: She Is Always the Last to Leave the Negotiation Table"
On August 31, 2015, Angela Merkel stood at a summer press conference in Berlin, facing hardly any easy questions. The Syrian war was still expanding, and large numbers of refugees were crossing the Mediterranean and Balkan routes into Europe. Local German governments worried that beds, schools, and administrative systems could not cope, conservative allies demanded setting a cap on numbers, and TV screens constantly showed borders, train stations, and temporary camps. Merkel spoke the phrase that would later become associated with her: “Wir schaffen das.” We can do this. Initially, this phrase was just a practical judgment for handling the problem: Germany had resources, society could mobilize, and Europe had to bear humanitarian and legal responsibilities. A few days later, facing refugees stranded in Hungary, Germany and Austria agreed to let them in. This decision provided safety for many and pushed Merkel into the most dangerous political moment of her sixteen years in office. Supporters held up welcome signs at train stations, local governments and volunteers began resettlement; opponents believed she had lost border control, and some within her party openly challenged her. In the 2017 federal election, Merkel’s conservative alliance’s vote share dropped from 41.5% in 2013 to 32.9%, and the anti-immigration AfD entered the federal parliament for the first time with 12.6%. This time, she did not hide difficulties behind technical language, nor did she wait for everyone’s agreement. A person known for caution made the most irrevocable choice. Before fame: inside the walls, first training herself not to express opinions lightly Angela

1️⃣【Crypto】Strategy buys an additional 1,665 BTC
Strategy spent about $142.7 million to increase BTC holdings, raising total holdings to 847,666 BTC. However, the average purchase price this round was $85,681, while the current BTC price is about $83,039, resulting in a short-term unrealized loss.
2️⃣【On-chain Meme】DOGE gives back ETF gains
DOGE is at $0.09309, down 3.84% in 24 hours, failing to hold $0.10. The record weekly inflows from the ETF-driven rally have quickly reversed, and the capital scale is still insufficient to reverse the trend.
3️⃣【US Stocks】Major US indices closed lower
Dow fell 0.67%, S&P 500 down 0.77%, Nasdaq down 0.92%. Oil prices and US Treasury yields rose together, reigniting market concerns over rising inflation and further rate hikes.
4️⃣【Macro】Oil prices rise for the second consecutive day
Brent crude rose to $105.91, WTI to $93.32. Even with increased Middle East exports, geopolitical and transportation risks continue to support oil prices, and global inflationary pressures keep intensifying.

"The Past Has Been On-Chain" Vol.18|September 28, 2023: The first time it didn't light up, but two weeks later Holesky finally produced a block
$ETH On the evening of September 28, 2023, at 8 PM, the genesis time arrived. Ethereum developers once again focused on the validator participation rate of the Holesky testnet. The network can only complete finalization if more than two-thirds of the staked weight are online and voting. A few minutes later, the participation rate crossed the threshold, and blocks began to be produced steadily. A developer announced the successful launch in the coordination channel, then joked, "Looks like we don't need to create a third one." Behind this sentence was a launch that was not smooth. Holesky was originally scheduled to go live on September 15, 2023. That day happened to be the one-year anniversary of Ethereum's merge completion, and the team hoped to commemorate the mainnet's farewell to mining with a new testnet that adopted proof-of-stake from the genesis block. When the time came, the chain did not start normally. The problem was with the execution layer genesis configuration. Some nodes used inconsistent configurations, resulting in several chains that could not merge. Although some validators manually corrected files and tried to continue running, the online staked weight was always insufficient, and the network could not complete finalization. Developers quickly gave up repairing this faulty genesis chain, regenerated configurations, distributed files, and scheduled the second launch for September 28. The date needs to be clarified: Holesky's official configuration set the genesis time to 12:00 UTC on September 28, 2023, corresponding to 8:00 PM Taiwan time that day, with no cross-day issue. CoinDesk's live record that day showed that about ten minutes later, developers confirmed the network had successfully launched. The mission of Holesky
"The Compound Interest of Life Vol.24|Katherine Johnson: She Calculated the Path to Space, but Her Name Was Delayed by Decades"
$SPCX On February 20, 1962, John Glenn was preparing to board Friendship 7. If the mission succeeded, he would become the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth. The orbital control equations had been input into an IBM electronic computer, and data was transmitted between computing facilities in Washington, Cape Canaveral, and Bermuda. The machine was much faster than humans and represented a new computational era for the U.S. space program. Glenn still made one request: please have Katherine Johnson recalculate the results. She sat at the desk, using a mechanical calculator to check the orbit from launch to splashdown. NASA later recorded that Glenn’s meaning was clear: if she said the numbers were reliable, he was ready to go. This story is often told as "man versus machine." The truth is more valuable. Johnson was not competing with the electronic computer in speed; she checked whether the equations, inputs, and results used by the program were consistent with each other. She used years of accumulated judgment to establish trust in a new system. That day, Glenn orbited the Earth three times and returned safely. The mission was recorded in U.S. space history, but the Black female mathematician responsible for verifying the numbers did not immediately become a publicly known name. Her compound interest was hidden in precision: breaking down complex problems into verifiable steps time and again, allowing others to entrust lives, budgets, and national plans to a set of numbers. Before fame: her talent appeared early, but the path did not follow Katherine Co
"The Past Has Been On-Chain" Vol.17|September 27, 2012: Bitcoin Has No Company, But a Foundation Was Established
$BTC On September 27, 2012, Gavin Andresen posted an announcement on the BitcoinTalk forum: The Bitcoin Foundation was officially established. At the time the post was published, Bitcoin had been running for just over three years. Satoshi Nakamoto had already faded out, and the software was mainly maintained by a group of developers scattered around the world. The network had no headquarters, no customer service, and no company that could represent it by signing, hiring, or responding to regulators. Freedom brought vitality but also left many tasks without accountability. Who would provide long-term funding for core developers? Who would maintain the test network and seed nodes? When the media associated Bitcoin with scams, money laundering, and the black market, who could provide clear responses? When businesses wanted to integrate Bitcoin but lacked security standards and operational norms, who could they turn to? That same month, the exchange platform Bitfloor was attacked, and about $250,000 worth of Bitcoin was stolen. Similar incidents continuously reinforced the negative impression of Bitcoin externally. Several early participants therefore decided to establish a real-world institution for this company-less protocol. The Foundation set three missions for itself: standardization, protection, and promotion of Bitcoin. Gavin looked to the Linux Foundation as a model. Linux is also maintained by global developers; the Foundation does not own the open-source code but can raise funds, hire key developers, hold conferences, and handle legal and business affairs for the ecosystem. The initial board members included Gavin Andresen, Pe
"The Compound Interest of Life Vol.23|John D. Rockefeller: Turning Every Drop of Oil into a System"
$XOM On May 15, 1911, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Standard Oil violated the Sherman Antitrust Act and ordered the breakup of this massive oil system. Seventy-two-year-old John D. Rockefeller had long since stepped away from daily operations but still held about a quarter of the parent company's shares. He had spent decades integrating refineries, railroad discounts, oil barrels, pipelines, warehouses, and sales networks into one system; now, the law demanded this system be separated. The ruling seemed like a defeat. Standard Oil was split into multiple independent companies, and Rockefeller lost control of the unified empire. Contrary to many expectations, he did not become poor because of this. Shareholders received shares of the split companies proportionally, and the automotive era continued to drive gasoline demand upward. Many subsidiaries later grew into industry giants like Exxon, Mobil, and Chevron. An antitrust ruling broke up the company but did not dismantle the accumulated technology, assets, brands, and distribution capabilities. Rockefeller's story is therefore difficult to write as a simple lesson in wealth. He demonstrated how systems can generate astonishing efficiency, but also showed that when efficiency combines with the power to exclude competition, society as a whole bears the cost. Before fame: His father wandered around, and his mother taught him to keep track of every penny. John Davison Rockefeller was born in 1839 in Richford, New York, on a farm
"The Past Has Been On-Chain" Vol.16|September 26, 2020: $281 million stolen, 84% surprisingly recovered
$BTC $ETH $USDT At 2:51 AM on September 26, 2020, KuCoin's risk control system triggered the first alert. An abnormal ETH transaction was transferring funds out from the exchange's hot wallet. Within minutes, more ETH and ERC-20 tokens flowed out through different addresses. At 3:01 AM, the system again indicated an abnormal hot wallet balance. At 3:15 AM, KuCoin formed an emergency response team; at 3:20 AM, the team shut down the wallet server, but the abnormal transfers on the blockchain did not stop. This detail quickly escalated the problem. The attacker had likely obtained the hot wallet's private keys; even with KuCoin shutting down internal servers, the attacker could still sign transactions from any connected device. At 4:20 AM, the team began moving assets that had not yet been transferred out into cold wallets. By 4:50 AM, most of the remaining funds had been moved. Around 5:00 AM, KuCoin contacted platforms including Binance, Huobi, OKEx, Bybit, and Upbit, requesting them to mark the attack addresses and block suspicious deposits. At 10:41 AM, KuCoin officially disclosed the incident; at 12:30 PM, CEO Johnny Lyu explained the timeline via livestream, promising that the affected users' funds would be covered by the exchange and insurance funds. All times above use KuCoin's announced UTC+8 timezone, which is the same as Taiwan time, so there is no cross-day conversion issue. The initial announcement did not disclose the total loss because the stolen asset package
