Altcoins Just Took the Lead in Open Interest Something important just changed in the derivatives market. For the first time since December 2024, aggregate open interest in altcoin perpetual futures has surpassed Bitcoin. That means traders are now carrying more outstanding perpetual positions across altcoins than they are across $BTC. This is not automatically bullish. It is a positioning signal. And positioning can create both opportunity and risk. The biggest question is whether this is genuine capital rotation or simply traders adding more leverage to the altcoin trade. Look at the names attracting the most attention. $ZEC has reached roughly $2.4B in futures open interest, while $BNB, $ARB, $XRP and $SOL are also seeing significant derivatives activity. ZEC's recent move above $1,000 was accompanied by roughly $34M in short liquidations. That tells me the market is becoming much more aggressive outside Bitcoin. My radar: $BTC — Still the benchmark. If BTC weakens sharply, altcoin leverage becomes vulnerable. $ETH — The first major test of whether rotation can move into large-cap smart-contract assets. $SOL $BNB $XRP — High-liquidity assets where derivatives positioning can quickly amplify moves. $ZEC — Extreme momentum, but also one of the clearest examples of how leverage can accelerate both directions. $ARB $UNI $AAVE $CRV — DeFi names to watch if rotation becomes broader. $SUI $APT $AVAX $NEAR — L1 beta could attract more capital if BTC continues consolidating. $LINK $ONDO — Infrastructure and RWA remain stronger fundamental themes than pure speculation. $TAO $RENDER $FET — Higher-beta sectors could benefit from expanding risk appetite. But I would not call this altseason yet. The more important interpretation is that traders are becoming comfortable taking risk outside Bitcoin. That can be the beginning of a broader rotation.
